6 Remedies for pregnancy carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is very much common among Pregnant Women or Mothers. Due to the numerous changes that occur in the body during pregnancy, it all contributes to pain in the wrist.

You already know that you can’t rely on Analgesics as it can harm your growing baby inside. So it becomes more difficult. And nothing annoying than trying to get rid of it as it does not go away that easily.

Already in the mood swing phase, the pain, numbness and tingling sensation in the wrist can trigger your mood even more. And you might become overwhelmed trying to get rid of it.

Well in this post you will learn natural remedies to get rid of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome during pregnancy or after delivery.

First, let’s get into why Pregnancy causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

1. Laxity of joints

During pregnancy, your body releases different types of hormones into the body. And some hormones are meant to make the joints loose so that the baby can come out easily. But it also makes the wrist joint loose and more likely to go into hyperextension and flexion. Due to which, it causes carpal tunnel syndrome.

2. Fluid Retention and Swelling

Fluid retention is high during pregnancy, and it causes swelling in your body. Due to swelling, especially when it occurs in the wrist, it squashes the Median Nerves located in the Carpal Tunnel and causes tingling, numbness, and weakness of the wrist.

3. Prolonged holding of Baby

After delivery, you need to hold your baby to breastfeed, or to play. When you have to hold your baby (which you usually do with your hands) for a longer period, the wrist goes into prolonged hyperextension. Which in turn compresses the median nerve causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Signs of symptoms of CTS during Pregnancy

There is no difference in CTS during Pregnancy and other Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Due to the nerve impingement, it causes tingling and numbness on the median side of the hands. It also causes pain in and around the wrist. In few severe cases, the hand muscles become weak and lose the hand strength to hold objects in your hand.

Remedies to Get rid of Pregnancy Carpal Tunnel syndrome

Relying on medication can harm your growing baby inside, so you need to go for other remedies that are natural and does not harm your baby. So following are some of the natural remedies to get rid of it.

1. Reduce Salt intake

Salt increases water retention and hence increases the chance of edema during pregnancy. Therefore, by reducing salt intake, you can also reduce the fluid retention capacity of your body and reduce edema.

2. Drink Lots of Water

Drinking lots of water not helps to keep our body well lubricated, hydrated and better circulation, it also helps to reduce water retention that causes swelling and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

3. Maintain Proper Posture

Poor posture or improper posture puts on more pressure on the joints and soft tissues. As in wrist, if you don’t maintain proper posture while performing wrist involving activities, especially while handling your baby, it can impinge the Median nerve causing tingling and numbness in the wrist.

Therefore keep your hand in neutral position, that is not either hyperflex or hyperextended.

4. Wear a Carpal Tunnel Brace and Support

One of my favorite management due to its immediate results, and soothing and warm effects that it gives to the painful wrist.

Ready-made braces and support available in online stores and markets also benefit to manage Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The metallic splints from the braces help to keep the wrist in a neutral position that prevents from impinging the Median nerves.

With the help of Velcro straps, it is easy to wear and remove. Just make sure while ordering that it is the right size.

5. Rest

Pain is a sign of your body demanding rest, whenever you are in wrist pain during pregnancy, your body is asking you to cut down the wrist motions.

The wrist movements aggravate the pain, so stopping or resting your painful wrist is essential and gives you immediate results. But of course, make sure you are resting in a neutral position.

6. Consult Physical Therapist

If the pain does not go away and keeps on hurting you, you need to consult a Physical Therapist experienced in CTS. It is a great choice as it does not involve medications which harm your baby.

Also, your Physical Therapist will teach you stretching exercises that help to reduce tension and impingements in the wrist that causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

With this post, I hope you have got a brief idea how Pregnancy causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and how to manage accordingly.

Though the pain is annoying and painful, it is easy to manage; especially I recommend wearing Splints and Braces.
